Ski flying is a winter sport that involves launching from a purpose-built hill and travelling as far as possible through the air before landing on a prepared slope. It is closely related to ski jumping, but takes place on much larger flying hills, allowing for higher speeds and significantly longer distances. While the equipment is similar, the scale of the hill and the extended airtime set ski flying apart.
ActivitySure can cover ski flying when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to organised participation and training on suitable flying hills, rather than professional competition. Although the fundamentals mirror ski jumping, the increased speed and distance mean the level of risk is greater.

Destination Insight
Ski flying is practised at a limited number of specialist venues worldwide, primarily in countries with established Nordic ski traditions such as Austria, Germany, Norway and Slovenia. These locations feature dedicated flying hills built to accommodate longer distances. Participation is typically linked to clubs or organised winter sport facilities rather than casual resort activity.
Ski flying involves high speeds, significant airtime and technical landings. Misjudged take-offs or unstable landings can result in serious impact injuries. Weather conditions, including wind direction and strength, play a crucial role in flight stability. If you are injured while ski flying abroad, you may require urgent medical treatment, specialist mountain response or repatriation to the UK.
