Abseiling is a controlled rope descent down cliffs, rock faces, towers or climbing walls. Its a popular activity for beginners and experienced climbers alike, combining technical skill with a healthy dose of adrenaline.
ActivitySure can cover descents both indoors and outdoors, including higher routes above 25 metres. The activity relies on specialist equipment, correct technique and proper supervision - so its important to make sure your travel insurance specifically includes abseiling before you take part abroad.

Destination Insight
Abseiling is commonly found in destinations with dramatic natural landscapes and established adventure tourism centres. Popular locations include the Blue Mountains in Australia, where canyon descents are widely available, as well as Table Mountain in South Africa, which combines technical routes with panoramic views. The Swiss Alps are also well known for guided alpine abseiling experiences, while New Zealands canyon regions and the limestone cliffs of Thailand attract travellers looking to combine climbing, abseiling and scenic exploration.
Many people take part as part of an organised excursion or guided experience while travelling.
Although abseiling is carefully managed, accidents can still happen. Slips, awkward landings or equipment-related issues can result in injuries that require medical treatment overseas.
Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong while youre taking part.
It’s not covered as standard. You will need to choose abseiling when arranging your ActivitySure policy. There are two options, specifying indoor or outdoor abseiling, and height requirements. Make sure you pick the one that best describes how you plan to abseil.
Yes, you can add indoor abseiling on a climbing wall to your policy. However, you must make sure that you do not exceed a height of 25 metres.
This version of abseiling is considered a lower risk than outdoor abseiling from a greater height, so you need to make sure you select cover for the appropriate activity.
This depends on the height you’re descending. You can choose from indoor or outdoor abseiling up to 25m, or outdoor abseiling only above 25m.
Outdoor abseiling is considered a higher-risk activity, especially at greater heights or in more exposed environments, so you need to make sure you select the appropriate level of cover for your participation.
Yes. When you add an activity to your policy, you receive cover for emergency medical expenses inclusive of repatriation, medical treatment, and emergency transport.
