Rap jumping, sometimes referred to as forward abseiling or rap running, involves descending a vertical surface face first using ropes and a harness. Unlike traditional abseiling, where participants descend backwards leaning away from the surface, rap jumping keeps you facing the structure, allowing you to run or step down in a controlled manner. It is also different from climbing or via ferrata, as the focus is on controlled descent rather than ascent or route progression. Rap jumping is typically delivered as a supervised experience by professional instructors.

There are two common formats of rap jumping. Indoor or outdoor climbing wall descents up to 25 metres are often used for introductory sessions, training or controlled demonstrations. Outdoor rap jumping above 25 metres usually takes place on buildings or natural rock faces and involves greater exposure and height, requiring stricter safety management. ActivitySure can cover rap jumping when you are taking part abroad at an amateur level and in line with the policy conditions.

Destination Insight

Where do people go for rap jumping?

Rap jumping is particularly popular in destinations that offer purpose-built urban or natural descent sites. Australia is well known for the activity, with cities such as Melbourne and Sydney offering professionally run descents from high-rise buildings.

Urban locations with suitable structures are commonly used for organised rap jumping events, while outdoor versions may also take place on cliffs or rock faces in destinations with established adventure activity providers.

Here's why rap jumping travel insurance matters:

Rap jumping involves controlled descent from height, which carries inherent risk even when managed by experienced instructors. Missteps, loss of balance or equipment issues can result in injury. If medical treatment is needed while abroad, or you need to return home earlier than planned, travel insurance can help provide financial protection.

Helpful travel tips

  • Check ropes, harnesses and attachment points with your instructor before starting the descent
  • Keep movements deliberate and controlled rather than rushing down the surface
  • Avoid pushing forcefully away from the wall, as this can affect balance and rope tension.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment provided by the organiser, including a helmet where required.
  • Always follow instructor guidance and do not take part if weather, surface or equipment conditions are unsuitable
