Via ferrata is a protected mountain route that uses fixed cables, ladders, metal rungs and suspension bridges to help participants move across exposed rock faces. The routes are designed to make steep or high terrain more accessible than traditional rock climbing, while still requiring a good head for heights, steady footing and basic climbing movement.
ActivitySure can cover via ferrata on an amateur, non-professional basis when you are taking part abroad. This applies to recreational participation on established routes, typically undertaken with a guide or as part of an organised group, rather than technical mountaineering or professional climbing activity. Although the routes are equipped with permanent safety systems, participants are still operating at height in mountainous environments.

Destination Insight
Via ferrata routes are most commonly found in mountainous regions of Europe, particularly in the Alps and Dolomites, where they were originally developed. Countries such as Italy, Austria and France offer extensive networks of graded routes ranging from introductory to more demanding lines. Via ferrata is also growing in popularity in other mountain regions worldwide, often linked to adventure tourism and guided alpine experiences.
Via ferrata involves sustained exposure to height, uneven terrain and changing weather conditions. Slips, falls or fatigue can result in injury, and access to medical facilities may be limited in remote mountain areas. If something goes wrong while you are abroad, medical treatment, rescue or repatriation may be required. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if an incident occurs.
