On-road motorcycling involves riding motorcycles or scooters on paved public roads as part of a trip. It is a popular way to explore new destinations, whether you are touring between towns, taking scenic routes or using a bike for day-to-day travel while abroad.
ActivitySure can cover on-road motorcycling when you are riding abroad at an amateur level, provided the activity meets the policy conditions. Cover applies under either the Europe activity level or Worldwide activity level, depending on where you are travelling and the policy you choose.
Riders must always hold the appropriate UK motorcycle licence for the capacity of the bike they are riding and must follow local laws. This applies whether you are using your own motorcycle or hiring one during your trip. It is also essential that riders wear full protective clothing.

Destination Insight
On-road motorcycling is popular in destinations known for scenic touring routes. Italy's Amalfi Coast attracts riders for its coastal roads and dramatic views, while California's Highway 1 is a classic option for long-distance road trips. The UK is also a popular place for motorcycle touring, with routes such as Scotland's North Coast 500 offering extended riding days across varied road conditions and changing weather.
Many travellers plan motorcycle holidays around quieter roads, countryside loops and multi-stop itineraries, often combining touring with local sightseeing.
Riding on unfamiliar roads can increase risk, particularly when traffic rules, road layouts or driving habits differ from the UK. Hazards such as poor road surfaces, weather changes, heavy traffic or reduced visibility can contribute to accidents. If you are injured while riding abroad, you may require emergency medical treatment or repatriation. Having suitable travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong during your trip.
