Off-road motorcycling involves riding motorcycles on unpaved surfaces such as dirt tracks, trails, mud routes and rugged terrain. It is a physically demanding activity that requires control, balance and experience, and is typically undertaken away from public roads in designated off-road areas.

ActivitySure can cover off-road motorcycling when you are taking part abroad at an amateur level, provided the activity meets the policy conditions. Cover is available for off-road motorcycling on bikes up to 250cc and over 250cc, and applies to both European and Worldwide policies, depending on your travel plans. You will need to apply the appropriate activity, dependent on the capacity of your motorcycle.

Riders must hold the appropriate UK motorcycle licence for the engine capacity of the bike they are riding. This applies whether you are using your own motorcycle or a hired bike while abroad. You must also wear full protective safety gear, including a helmet, boots, gloves and body protection.

Destination Insight

Where do people go off-road motorcycling?

Off-road motorcycling is popular in destinations that offer wide open terrain and established trail networks. Countries such as Spain are well known for guided trail riding and enduro-style routes, particularly in rural and mountainous regions.

Morocco attracts experienced riders with long-distance desert routes and organised tours across varied terrain, while the United States offers extensive off-road riding areas, including forest trails and purpose-built off-road parks.

Many travellers take part through organised riding holidays, training courses or guided tours designed for amateur riders.

Here's why off-road motorcycling travel insurance matters:

Off-road motorcycling involves uneven surfaces, reduced traction and unpredictable terrain, all of which increase the likelihood of falls or collisions. Injuries can occur even at lower speeds, particularly on rocky, sandy or muddy ground. If you are injured while riding abroad, you may require emergency medical treatment, evacuation from remote areas or repatriation. Having suitable travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong.

Helpful travel tips

  • Always wear full protective safety gear, including a helmet, boots, gloves and body protection.
  • Ensure you hold the correct UK motorcycle licence for the engine size of the bike you are riding.
  • Ride within your experience level, particularly on unfamiliar or technical terrain.
  • Check route conditions and terrain before increasing speed or attempting difficult sections.
  • Always follow instructions provided by tour leaders, instructors or organisers.
