Yachting involves travelling by sailboat or motor yacht for leisure or competition. When crewing, participants assist with onboard tasks such as handling lines, trimming sails, navigation support and general deck duties. Conditions can vary significantly depending on whether sailing is undertaken close to shore or further offshore.
ActivitySure can cover yachting on an amateur, non-professional basis when you are taking part abroad as a crew member. Cover may apply to inshore crewing, where sailing takes place within coastal or territorial waters and generally remains within reach of port facilities. Offshore crewing or racing, where vessels travel further from land and may involve longer passages and open-sea conditions, is treated as a higher-risk variation and may require the appropriate level of cover.

Destination Insight
Yachting is popular in destinations known for favourable wind conditions and scenic coastlines. Greece and Croatia attract crews for island-hopping routes in relatively sheltered waters, while the Mediterranean remains a hub for both leisure sailing and organised regattas. Offshore racing and passage-making are also common in parts of the Atlantic and Caribbean, where longer sea routes and competitive events draw amateur crews from around the world.
Being at sea presents risks including slips on wet decks, rope and winch injuries, sudden boom movement and the effects of changing weather conditions. Offshore sailing can also involve longer distances from immediate medical facilities. If you are injured while abroad, medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation may be required. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong during your trip.
