Water skiing involves being towed behind a motorboat while standing on one or two skis and travelling across the surface of the water. Riders use balance and body position to stay upright as the boat generates speed, and sessions may take place on lakes, reservoirs or coastal waters with suitable conditions.

ActivitySure can cover water skiing on an amateur, non-professional basis when you are taking part abroad. Cover is available for water skiing with or without jumping, and is dependent on the addition of the appropriate activity pack. Both forms apply to recreational participation rather than professional competition or paid performance.

Destination Insight

Where is popular to go water skiing?

Water skiing is popular in destinations with calm, open water and reliable weather conditions. France offers smooth lake environments suited to recreational skiing, while Thailand has established water sports centres catering to visiting travellers. In the USA, inland lakes are widely used for both standard water skiing and more advanced variations. Island resorts in Greece and Mauritius also provide coastal water skiing in clear, warm conditions.

Here's why water skiing travel insurance matters:

Water skiing involves speed, strong tow forces and the risk of high-impact falls. Shoulder strains, knee injuries and impact injuries are possible, particularly when attempting jumps. If you are injured while abroad, medical treatment or repatriation may be required. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong during your trip.

Helpful travel tips

  • Follow all safety instructions and briefings provided by instructors or boat operators.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment such as a buoyancy aid or impact vest.
  • Keep your knees slightly bent to maintain balance and absorb movement.
  • Stay well clear of other boats, obstacles and swimmers
  • Release the tow rope safely and promptly if you lose balance or finish your run.
