Water polo is a fast-paced team sport played in a swimming pool, where players swim continuously while passing the ball and attempting to score goals. It combines endurance swimming, ball control and close-contact defending, and is typically played in deep water where participants cannot touch the pool floor.
ActivitySure can cover water polo on an amateur, non-professional basis when you are taking part abroad. This applies to recreational matches, club-level games and organised tournaments entered on a non-professional basis. Although water polo takes place in a supervised pool environment, the combination of physical contact and sustained swimming effort means injuries and fatigue-related incidents can occur.

Destination Insight
Water polo has a strong following in countries such as Hungary and Italy, where competitive leagues and international success have made the sport widely recognised. Australia also has an established water polo community, often linked to coastal cities and major aquatic centres. In addition to formal competitions, some coastal resorts and holiday destinations host casual summer games in large outdoor pools.
Water polo involves continuous swimming, sudden direction changes and close physical marking. Shoulder strains, finger injuries, facial impacts and exhaustion are common risks. If you are injured while playing abroad, medical treatment or repatriation may be required. Having appropriate travel insurance in place can help protect you financially if something goes wrong during your trip.
Yes, ActivitySure can cover water polo, but it is not included as standard. You will need to add it to your policy before you take part.
Yes, water polo can include casual games arranged by hotel entertainment teams or pool staff. Even if it feels relaxed, it should still be added to your policy before you play.
Water polo in coastal water may be covered if you have added the activity and the game is played in safe conditions. You should follow any instructions from organisers and avoid taking part where there are strong currents, rough water, or poor visibility. It is your responsibility to minimise the risk of any activity as much as you can.
Professional participation is not covered. Amateur water polo matches or organised games may be covered when the activity has been added to your policy.
If you have added water polo to your policy, your cover can include emergency medical assistance abroad if you are injured while taking part. Further details, including limits and exclusions, can be found in your Policy Wording.
