Swimming covers recreational and fitness-based activity in pools, lakes and the sea, and is one of the most common activities travellers take part in while abroad. It can range from casual dips in hotel pools to open-water swimming in coastal or inland locations, depending on where and how you swim.
ActivitySure can cover swimming on an amateur, non-professional basis when you are taking part abroad, provided it meets the policy conditions. This can include swimming in- or outside marked areas, depending whether or not a lifeguard is present. Swimming from a boat can also be covered, even where no lifeguard is present, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. Because risk levels vary depending on location, supervision and water conditions, it is important to understand how cover applies before entering the water.

Destination Insight
Swimming is popular worldwide, but destinations with warm climates and clear water attract travellers specifically for sea swimming. The Maldives is well known for calm lagoons and reef-protected waters, making swimming a central part of many trips. The Seychelles also offers sheltered bays and clear coastal waters suitable for relaxed swimming. In Australia, swimming takes place across beaches, pools and coastal areas, with conditions varying significantly depending on location, tides and weather.
Travellers may swim in pools, designated beach areas or open water depending on local conditions and personal experience.
Swimming may seem low risk, but accidents can happen due to fatigue, sudden changes in water conditions or unexpected currents. In open water, distance from shore or lack of supervision can increase the seriousness of an incident. Medical treatment, rescue assistance or repatriation may be required if something goes wrong. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if you are injured or taken ill while swimming abroad.
