Snow biking involves riding a purpose-built bike adapted for snow-covered terrain. Unlike fat biking, which uses oversized tyres on a standard-style bicycle, snow biking typically refers to a bike fitted with a ski at the front and a track or ski system at the rear. The design allows the rider to glide and steer over snow in a way that feels closer to skiing than traditional cycling. Snow bikes are often used on groomed ski runs or designated winter trails.
ActivitySure can cover snow biking when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to recreational riding within recognised winter sport areas. It does not extend to professional racing or competition. Although the riding position may feel familiar to cyclists, snow biking takes place in a winter mountain environment, with similar terrain and surface risks to alpine skiing.

Destination Insight
Snow biking is available in selected alpine resorts across France, Switzerland and Austria, where operators offer guided sessions on prepared slopes. Some North American mountain destinations also provide snow bike experiences as an alternative winter activity. It is typically offered within managed resort areas rather than in open backcountry terrain.
Snow biking involves descending snow-covered slopes at speed. Icy patches, uneven surfaces and shared runs can increase the risk of falls or collisions. The combination of a rigid frame and hard-packed snow can lead to impact injuries if control is lost. If you are injured while snow biking abroad, you may require medical treatment, mountain assistance or repatriation to the UK.
