Sledging involves sliding down snow-covered slopes on a small sled or toboggan. It is a popular winter activity enjoyed by both children and adults and is often seen as a relaxed alternative to skiing or snowboarding. When travelling, sledging is typically undertaken at an amateur, recreational level on designated runs or gentle slopes.

ActivitySure can cover sledging when you are taking part overseas at an amateur level. Although it is often considered a low-skill activity, sledging can still involve speed, hard-packed snow or ice and shared runs. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong during your trip.

Destination Insight

Where is popular to go sledging?

Sledging is widely available in winter destinations with reliable snowfall and dedicated sledging facilities. Resorts in Switzerland and Austria commonly offer purpose-built sledging runs that cater to a wide range of ages and ability levels. It's also popular in parts of the UK during winter conditions, particularly in areas with managed slopes or seasonal activity centres. In some resorts, sledging takes place after dark on floodlit tracks, creating a festive atmosphere and extending the activity into the evening.

Many travellers include sledging as part of a wider winter holiday alongside other snow-based activities.

Here's why sledging travel insurance matters:

Sledging involves descending slopes at speed on snow or ice, which increases the risk of collisions, falls or impact injuries. Hard surfaces, obstacles or other sledgers can increase the chance of injury, particularly on busy runs or icy conditions. If you are injured while sledging abroad, travel insurance helps protect you financially if you require medical treatment, hospital care or repatriation.

Helpful travel tips

  • Use designated sledging slopes that are free from trees, rocks and other obstacles
  • Sit upright with feet facing forward to help steer and slow down safely.
  • Avoid sledging headfirst, as this increases the risk of head and neck injuries.
  • Keep a safe distance from other sledgers, especially on busy runs.
  • Follow any instructions or guidance provided by resort staff.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. If you’re planning to go sledging or tobogganing abroad, you’ll need to add Winter Sports cover to your ActivitySure policy.

It’s not usually included as standard, so it needs to be selected during the quote process for cover to apply.

Yes - injuries from normal participation, such as falls or minor collisions, may be covered as long as you’re taking part within the terms of your policy.

This can include emergency medical treatment and assistance while overseas.

Yes - sledging on designated runs or organised areas is very different to using informal or unsuitable terrain. The further you move away from controlled environments, the more likely it is to fall outside the intended level of cover.

No - even though they may look similar, they’re treated differently based on how they’re done.

Sledging and snow tubing are usually considered lower-risk recreational activities when done in designated areas. Airboarding involves higher speeds and less control, so it’s typically treated as a higher-risk activity.

Yes - these are also covered when Winter Sports cover is added to your policy.

It’s always worth checking you’ve selected the right cover, as similar activities aren’t automatically included without it.
