Shinty is a traditional stick-and-ball sport originating in Scotland, played on grass pitches using a curved stick and a small ball. It is fast-paced and physical, involving running, striking and close player interaction. When taken part in abroad, shinty is typically played at an amateur level through club matches, friendly fixtures or organised events.
ActivitySure can cover shinty when you are taking part overseas at an amateur level. Although it shares similarities with other stick sports, shinty involves higher ball speeds and close contact between players, which increases the risk of injury. Having appropriate travel insurance in place helps protect you financially if something goes wrong while playing during your trip.

Destination Insight
Shinty is most closely associated with Scotland, particularly the Highlands, where the sport has deep cultural roots. Areas such as Inverness, Fort William and Oban are well known for local clubs and regular competitive fixtures. While shinty is less commonly played outside Scotland, travelling players may take part in matches, festivals or exhibition games organised by clubs and community groups.
Shinty involves fast ball movement, swinging sticks and close player contact. Injuries can occur through collisions, falls or impact from sticks or the ball, particularly during contested play. Playing on unfamiliar pitches or against unfamiliar teams can further increase risk. If you are injured while playing shinty abroad, travel insurance helps protect you financially if you require medical treatment, hospital care or repatriation.
