Shark cage diving and shark swimming are controlled wildlife experiences that allow participants to observe sharks in their natural environment. Shark cage diving involves entering the water inside a submerged protective cage, while shark swimming may take place without a cage under close supervision, depending on the location and operator. Both activities are typically offered by licensed providers and are undertaken as recreational, amateur experiences while travelling abroad.
ActivitySure can cover shark cage diving and supervised shark swimming when you are taking part overseas at an amateur level. While cage diving provides a physical barrier between participants and sharks, and shark swimming is tightly managed by professional crews, both activities involve open water, marine conditions and wildlife interaction. This means there is still an element of risk, making appropriate travel insurance important before taking part.

Destination Insight
Shark cage diving is most closely associated with South Africa, where trips are commonly offered to observe great white sharks under strict safety controls. Australia is also a popular destination, offering professionally managed cage diving experiences in coastal waters. Mexico is well known for organised shark swimming experiences, particularly in areas where reef sharks or whale sharks migrate seasonally. These activities are typically run by licensed operators with safety briefings and crew supervision throughout.
Many travellers take part as part of a guided excursion, often combined with other marine or wildlife experiences.
Shark cage diving and shark swimming take place in open water environments where conditions can change quickly. Risks may include slips or falls when entering or exiting the water, seasickness, breathing difficulties, or other medical issues. Remote locations can also mean longer response times if medical assistance is needed. If you are injured or become unwell while taking part abroad, travel insurance helps protect you financially if you require medical treatment, emergency assistance or repatriation.
Yes, provided you’ve added it to your policy. It isn’t covered as standard, so you’ll need to add it in order to receive cover while taking part. Claims will only be considered for the activity shown on your Policy Certificate.
As long as it’s added to your policy, yes. If you’re injured or fall ill while taking part, there would be cover available for emergency medical expenses, which can include hospital stays, treatment, and repatriation if this is medically necessary.
No. Shark cage diving involves staying inside a protective cage while sharks are nearby. Swimming with sharks usually means being in open water without a cage. The risks are completely different, and ActivitySure does not cover swimming with sharks without the use of a cage.
Not in terms of activity. Some shark cage experiences keep you at or near the surface, while others may involve breathing equipment or a more structured dive. Regardless, you must add shark cage diving or swimming to your policy for cover to apply.
Yes. You should only take part with a licensed and recognised activity provider. It’s important to follow all instructor guidance, safety briefings, and wear the protective equipment required.
You should always take care to minimise the risks of any activity as much as you can.
