Safari trekking involves guided walking experiences through wildlife regions, usually within recognised reserves or conservation areas. Unlike vehicle-based safaris, trekking takes place on foot and focuses on observing landscapes, learning about ecosystems and tracking wildlife signs under supervision. Routes may include open plains, bush terrain or light woodland, with conditions that can involve heat, uneven ground and extended walking distances.
ActivitySure can cover safari trekking when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad, even if the excursion has not been arranged through a UK provider before departure. This applies to organised walking safaris led by qualified local guides within authorised areas. It does not extend to professional wildlife handling, conservation work or unsupervised exploration in restricted zones. Although these treks are structured and managed, being on foot in a natural habitat carries inherent risk.

Destination Insight
Safari trekking is most commonly associated with destinations in Africa, including South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya. Many reserves offer guided bush walks as part of a wider safari experience. Smaller group sizes are typical, allowing closer engagement with the environment while remaining under professional supervision.
Walking in remote wildlife areas can involve challenging terrain, high temperatures and limited immediate access to medical facilities. While guides manage safety protocols carefully, slips, trips or environmental factors can still result in injury. In more isolated regions, evacuation and onward medical care may require specialist arrangements. If you are injured while safari trekking abroad, you may need treatment, transport to hospital or repatriation to the UK.
