Rowing is a water sport where participants use oars to propel a narrow boat across rivers, lakes or sheltered coastal waters. Unlike kayaking or canoeing, rowing involves facing backwards and working in coordinated strokes, often as part of a crew. When travelling abroad, rowing is typically enjoyed at an amateur level, whether through club sessions, training camps or organised recreational outings.
ActivitySure can cover rowing when you are taking part overseas on an amateur, non-professional basis and in line with the policy conditions. Although rowing is often carried out in controlled environments, spending extended periods on the water means suitable travel insurance remains important.

Destination Insight
Rowing has a strong presence in destinations with established waterways and rowing traditions. The River Thames in the UK is particularly well known for club rowing and historic regattas, attracting visiting rowers throughout the season. Internationally, locations such as Lake Lucerne in Switzerland and Canadas extensive lakes and rivers are popular for rowing, offering calm water conditions and access to organised clubs and facilities.
Rowing places repeated strain on muscles and joints, particularly during longer sessions or intensive training. Overuse injuries, collisions with other boats, or incidents during launching and landing can still occur. If you need medical treatment while abroad, or your trip is disrupted unexpectedly, travel insurance can help provide financial protection.
Yes. Recreational inshore rowing is covered as standard with ActivitySure, so you don’t need to add it to your policy. However, if you plan to row recreationally offshore, this must be added for cover to apply.
Yes. Inshore recreational rowing and offshore recreational rowing are treated very differently. Inshore rowing is lower risk, while offshore rowing needs to be selected specifically because of the greater distance from shore, changing sea conditions, and increased rescue risk.
Yes. Provided the correct rowing activity is applied to your policy, you can be covered for emergency medical expenses if you’re injured while taking part. You should follow safety instructions, use suitable safety equipment, and stick to the guidance of the rowing club, organiser, or tour provider.
No. Rowing, kayaking, canoeing, and rafting are treated as different water activities. If your trip involves a specific craft or route, select the activity that matches what you’re actually doing.
Yes, recreational inshore rowing may be covered as standard if it’s an organised session, rowing tour, or casual holiday activity. Professional competition, paid participation, or taking part under professional terms is not covered.
