River bugging is a white water activity where participants use a small, one-person inflatable craft to travel downstream while lying in their front, and steering with their body and fins. Unlike rafting, which is a group activity using large inflatable boats, river bugging is highly individual and places you much closer to the water and riverbed. It also differs from hydrospeeding, as river bugs are typically more buoyant and designed for guided recreational use rather than technical river descent. When travelling abroad, river bugging is usually undertaken at an amateur level as part of an organised adventure experience.
ActivitySure can cover river bugging when you are taking part overseas on an amateur, non-professional basis and in line with the policy conditions. As the activity takes place in fast-flowing rivers and involves direct contact with water and submerged features, suitable travel insurance is an important part of trip planning.

Destination Insight
River bugging is popular in destinations with clean, fast-flowing rivers and established adventure centres. Scotland offers a variety of rivers suited to guided river bugging, particularly in mountainous and rural regions. It is also widely offered in destinations such as Slovenia and New Zealand, where clear rivers and controlled rapids make river bugging a popular addition to adventure tourism itineraries.
River bugging involves navigating moving water and rocky riverbeds at close range. Strong currents, submerged obstacles or collisions with rocks can lead to bruises, sprains or impact injuries. If you require medical treatment while abroad, or need to return home earlier than planned, travel insurance can help provide financial protection.
