Rafting involves travelling down rivers in inflatable rafts, guided by trained instructors and powered by paddling and river flow. Routes vary significantly depending on water grade, from gentle, scenic stretches to highly technical white water rapids. When taken part in abroad, rafting is almost always an organised activity enjoyed at an amateur level, with safety briefings and professional guides leading the trip.

Rafting is commonly classified by river grade. Grades 1 to 3 involve slower-moving water, small waves and straightforward routes that are suitable for beginners and first-time participants. Grade 4 rafting introduces stronger currents, larger waves and more complex manoeuvres, requiring greater teamwork and responsiveness. Grade 5 rafting represents the most challenging conditions, with powerful rapids, technical lines and a higher level of risk, typically reserved for experienced groups under strict supervision.

ActivitySure can cover rafting when you are taking part overseas on an amateur, non-professional basis and in line with the policy conditions. As risk levels increase with higher water grades, suitable travel insurance is particularly important, so ensure that you have selected the appropriate activity pack for your grade.

Destination Insight

Where is popular to go rafting?

Rafting is popular in destinations known for varied river systems and established guiding operations. Costa Rica offers a wide range of rafting experiences, from calmer rivers winding through rainforest to challenging white water runs.

Nepal and Slovenia are also well known for rafting, combining dramatic landscapes with rivers that cater to different experience levels, making them popular choices for organised rafting trips abroad.

Here's why rafting travel insurance matters:

Rafting takes place in unpredictable natural environments. Strong currents, submerged obstacles and collisions with rocks or other rafts can lead to injuries or being thrown into the water. If medical treatment is needed while abroad, or you need to return home earlier than planned, travel insurance can help provide financial protection.

Helpful travel tips

  • Listen carefully to timing and paddle commands given by the guide.
  • Brace your feet securely inside the raft to maintain stability in rough water.
  • Keep a low centre of gravity, particularly when navigating rapids.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment provided by the organiser, including helmets and buoyancy aids.
  • Always follow organiser instructions and do not take part if river or weather conditions are unsuitable.
