Petanque is a target sport played by throwing hollow metal boules as close as possible to a small wooden jack. Originating in France, it is usually played on gravel, sand or compacted earth surfaces. Unlike bowls, players stand within a fixed circle and throw with both feet on the ground, focusing on accuracy and tactical placement rather than power. Games may be played casually in public squares or as part of organised club competitions.
ActivitySure can cover petanque when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to recreational play or organised local tournaments, rather than professional competition. While petanque is generally low impact, it still involves repetitive throwing, bending and standing for extended periods, often in warm outdoor conditions.

Destination Insight
Petanque is particularly popular in France, where it is commonly played in village squares and dedicated boulodromes. It is also enjoyed in Spain, Belgium and other parts of Europe, with many holidaymakers joining informal games while travelling. In warmer climates, evening matches are common to avoid peak daytime heat.
Although petanque is considered a relaxed sport, minor injuries can still occur. Strains to the shoulder or back may result from repeated throwing, and slips or trips are possible on loose gravel surfaces. In hot weather, dehydration or heat-related illness can also become a concern. If you are injured while taking part abroad, you may require medical treatment or assistance returning home.
