Passenger sledging is a winter activity where you ride as a seated passenger on a sledge pulled by a horse or motor vehicle across snow or ice. Unlike active sledging or tobogganing, you are not steering or controlling the sledge yourself, as speed and direction are managed by the driver or operator. It is typically a relaxed, scenic experience and is popular with travellers taking part at an amateur level as part of an organised winter excursion.

ActivitySure can cover passenger sledging when you are taking part abroad on an amateur basis and in line with the policy conditions. Although the activity is generally gentle and supervised, it still takes place in cold, slippery environments where accidents can happen, making suitable travel insurance an important part of your trip planning.

Destination Insight

Where is popular to go passenger sledging?

Passenger sledging is widely offered in Alpine and Nordic winter destinations, where snowy landscapes and established routes create ideal conditions. Austria and Switzerland are well known for traditional horse-drawn sleigh rides through alpine forests and mountain valleys.

It is also popular in Finland, where passenger sledging is often combined with winter sightseeing experiences, including journeys across frozen trails and snowy wilderness areas.

Here's why passenger sledging travel insurance matters:

Even when you are not in control of the sledge, risks remain. Icy surfaces, sudden movements, uneven terrain or collisions can lead to falls or impact injuries. If you require medical treatment while abroad, or need to return home earlier than planned, travel insurance can help provide financial protection.

Helpful travel tips

  • Keep your weight centred on the sledge and hold on securely to reduce the risk of slipping or tipping
  • Allow the driver or operator to control speed and direction, especially on downhill or narrow sections
  • Avoid leaning suddenly or making unexpected movements that could affect balance
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment and clothing for cold conditions, including sturdy footwear and any protective gear provided by the organiser.
  • Always follow instructions from the activity organiser or driver, and do not take part if weather or surface conditions are unsuitable
