Parapenting, sometimes referred to as paraponting, is a form of foot-launched flight using a lightweight canopy wing. Participants run from an elevated take-off point, allowing the wing to inflate before lifting into the air. Once airborne, direction and speed are controlled using brake toggles and body positioning. It is closely related to paragliding and, in many cases, the terms are used interchangeably. The activity relies on suitable wind conditions, careful launch technique and controlled landings in designated areas.
ActivitySure can cover parapenting or paraponting when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to recreational flights carried out independently or under instruction, rather than professional competition or commercial display flying. Although the equipment is designed for controlled gliding, the activity takes place at height and is dependent on weather conditions, which introduces inherent risk.

Destination Insight
Parapenting is popular in mountainous and coastal regions where consistent lift conditions are available. Destinations such as France, Spain and parts of Turkey are well known for launch sites that attract visiting flyers. Many travellers take part as part of an adventure holiday, often flying from established sites with marked landing zones.
Foot-launched flight involves altitude, wind reliance and exposure to changing weather. Misjudged landings, turbulence or unexpected shifts in wind direction can lead to falls or impact injuries. In mountainous terrain, access for assistance may be limited and rescue operations can be complex. If you are injured while parapenting abroad, you may require medical treatment, evacuation or repatriation to the UK.
