Off-piste skiing and snowboarding take place outside marked resort pistes and maintained runs. Instead of groomed slopes, participants travel across natural snow in open mountain terrain. This can include powder fields, tree runs and ungroomed descents beyond resort boundaries. Unlike piste skiing, off-piste routes are not regularly patrolled or prepared, and conditions can vary significantly depending on snowfall, weather and altitude.
ActivitySure can cover off-piste skiing and snowboarding when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies whether you are skiing or snowboarding independently within permitted resort areas or accompanied by a qualified guide. Professional competition or activity outside recognised ski areas is not included. Even with a guide, off-piste terrain presents greater risk than standard piste skiing due to natural hazards and changing mountain conditions.

Destination Insight
Off-piste terrain is widely available in established alpine destinations such as France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy, as well as in parts of North America. Mountain resorts with significant snowfall often provide accessible side-country or backcountry areas. Many experienced skiers and snowboarders seek off-piste routes for fresh powder and less crowded descents.
Off-piste environments involve unmarked obstacles, variable snow depth and the potential for avalanches. Falls in deep powder or on uneven ground can result in fractures, ligament injuries or head trauma. Rescue operations in remote mountain areas may require specialist search and mountain response teams, which can be costly. If you are injured while skiing or snowboarding off-piste abroad, you may require evacuation, hospital treatment or repatriation to the UK.
