Octopush, also known as underwater hockey, is a team sport played at the bottom of a swimming pool. Players use short sticks to pass and manoeuvre a weighted puck along the pool floor, aiming to score goals while holding their breath. The game is fast-paced and highly physical, combining swimming ability, teamwork and controlled breath-hold diving.
Matches are played without breathing apparatus, with players repeatedly diving down from the surface to take part in short bursts of play. Because of this, octopush requires a good level of fitness, coordination and awareness, and is typically played in organised club sessions, training environments and amateur competitions.
ActivitySure can cover octopush when you're taking part abroad at an amateur level, including organised training and competitive matches, provided the activity meets the policy conditions. While it takes place in a controlled pool environment, suitable travel insurance remains important due to the physical demands involved.

Destination Insight
Octopush has a strong presence in the UK, where it is played regularly through local clubs and national leagues. Many pools host dedicated underwater hockey sessions, attracting both experienced players and newcomers to the sport. Internationally, octopush is also popular in countries such as South Africa and New Zealand, where visiting players often take part in club matches, training camps and friendly tournaments while travelling.
Although octopush is played in a pool rather than open water, it places strain on the body through repeated breath-holding, rapid swimming and close physical play. Fatigue, muscle strains or minor collisions can occur, and players may occasionally require medical attention while abroad. If you are injured or become unwell during your trip, travel insurance can help support access to treatment or assistance.
