Mono-skiing involves skiing on a single wide ski with both boots fixed side by side on one board. Unlike traditional alpine skiing, which uses two separate skis, mono-skiing requires balance and edge control across a single platform. It allows for sweeping carved turns and smooth transitions, but demands strong technique and stability, particularly at higher speeds. Mono-skis are most often used on prepared pistes, although they may also be seen in freestyle or powder conditions.
ActivitySure can cover mono-skiing when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to recreational skiing within recognised resort boundaries, rather than professional competition or extreme off-piste activity. While the equipment differs from standard skis, mono-skiing carries similar downhill risks including speed, changing snow conditions and shared slope environments.

Destination Insight
Mono-skiing is typically practised in established alpine resorts across France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. It is less common than conventional skiing but has a dedicated following, with some resorts hosting informal gatherings or specialist interest groups. Most mono-skiers use groomed pistes within managed ski areas.
Downhill skiing on a mono-ski involves speed and impact risk, particularly on hard-packed or icy snow. Falls can lead to sprains, fractures or ligament injuries, especially to knees and wrists. Collisions with other slope users are also possible in busy resort areas. If you are injured while mono-skiing abroad, you may require medical treatment, mountain assistance or repatriation to the UK.
