Kloofing is an adventure activity that involves moving through a canyon or gorge by a combination of walking, scrambling, swimming and jumping into natural pools. The term is commonly used in South Africa, although similar activities may be described elsewhere as canyoning. Routes often follow riverbeds through steep-sided ravines, with participants navigating waterfalls, rock ledges and flowing water. Unlike standard hiking, kloofing takes place in wet, uneven terrain where water depth and current can vary.

Destination Insight
Kloofing is particularly associated with South Africa, where mountainous regions and river gorges provide suitable terrain. It is also practised in destinations with dramatic canyon landscapes and clear river systems. Guided tours are often offered as part of adventure travel itineraries, combining hiking, water exploration and cliff jumping in one route.
Kloofing involves slippery rocks, variable water depth and moving currents. Jumps into pools, even when guided, can result in sprains, fractures or impact injuries if landing positions are misjudged. Sudden changes in weather can also affect water levels and conditions. If you are injured while taking part abroad, you may require medical treatment, rescue assistance or repatriation to the UK.
