Ice windsurfing combines elements of windsurfing and ice sailing. Instead of travelling across water on a board, participants move over frozen surfaces using a sail mounted to a board or lightweight frame fitted with skates or blades. Wind power drives the movement, and speeds can build quickly on smooth ice. Unlike traditional windsurfing, there is no water resistance to slow you down, and the surface beneath you is solid and unforgiving.
ActivitySure can cover ice windsurfing when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to recreational participation on suitable frozen lakes or prepared ice areas, rather than professional competition or extreme speed attempts. While the principles are similar to water-based windsurfing, the colder environment and hard surface introduce additional risks that should not be underestimated.

Destination Insight
Ice windsurfing is typically practised in countries with reliably frozen lakes during winter months. Parts of Scandinavia, Canada and northern Europe provide suitable conditions when ice thickness is safe and monitored. Participants often join organised groups or clubs that operate on frozen inland waters rather than open sea locations.
Ice windsurfing involves wind-driven speed, balance and exposure to low temperatures. Falls can result in fractures, cuts or head injuries, and the hard ice surface increases impact risk compared to water. Cold weather conditions also raise the possibility of hypothermia if you are exposed for prolonged periods. If you are injured while taking part abroad, you may require medical treatment, evacuation from a remote area or repatriation to the UK.
