Fell running, sometimes referred to as hill running, involves running or jogging across steep natural terrain, often over open countryside, moorland or mountainous ground. Routes typically include uneven surfaces, sharp ascents and descents, and can vary significantly depending on weather, visibility and elevation.
Fell running activities may be categorised by altitude, and it is important to ensure your activity falls within the applicable altitude range before taking part abroad. Fell running must be undertaken at an amateur level only and within these applicable altitude limits, which is a maximum of 6,000m above sea level.
ActivitySure can cover fell running when you are taking part abroad, provided the activity meets the policy conditions. As the activity takes place in exposed and often remote environments, having suitable travel insurance in place before taking part is important.

Destination Insight
Fell running has strong roots in the UK, particularly in the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands, where rugged landscapes and rapidly changing weather are central to the sport. It is also popular in alpine regions such as France and Switzerland, where higher elevation routes attract runners seeking longer ascents and more technical terrain.
Many travellers take part independently, while others join organised events or guided trail running experiences.
Running at altitude and across uneven ground increases the risk of slips, falls and sprains, particularly on steep descents or in poor conditions. Injuries may occur far from immediate medical assistance, and evacuation or treatment can be more complex in mountainous areas. Travel insurance helps protect you financially if you require medical care or need to return home following an injury.
