Snowcat skiing, or just cat skiing, involves being transported by a tracked vehicle, known as a snowcat, to reach higher or more remote mountain terrain before skiing back down. Unlike traditional resort skiing, which relies on chairlifts and gondolas, snowcat skiing gives access to ungroomed slopes away from main pistes. Groups are typically guided, with multiple runs completed throughout the day using the snowcat for uphill travel.

ActivitySure can cover snowcat skiing when you are taking part on an amateur, non-professional basis during your trip abroad. This applies to organised recreational outings led by experienced guides. It does not extend to professional competition or expedition-level mountaineering. While snowcat skiing avoids the need to hike uphill, it often takes place in natural snow conditions similar to off-piste skiing, which can include deeper powder and variable terrain.

Destination Insight

Where is popular for snowcat skiing?

Snowcat skiing is commonly offered in mountain regions with reliable snowfall, including parts of Canada, the United States and selected European alpine resorts. Japan also attracts riders seeking deep powder conditions. Operators typically run structured day trips with small groups and safety briefings before departure.

Here's why snowcat skiing travel insurance matters:

Snowcat skiing usually takes place on ungroomed terrain where snow depth, obstacles and weather conditions can vary. Falls in deep powder, hidden rocks or tree runs can result in injury. Although guided, these areas may be further from resort medical facilities, meaning evacuation could take longer. If you are injured while snowcat skiing abroad, you may require mountain assistance, medical treatment or repatriation to the UK.

Helpful travel tips

  • Only use ski routes approved by your guide and avoid unsupervised descents.
  • Listen carefully to terrain briefings before each run.
  • Ski within your ability level and remain aware of natural hazards
  • Follow all instructions and safety guidance given by your guides
  • Stay with your group and avoid separating from the guide.
  • Wear appropriate safety equipment, including a helmet and avalanche safety gear where required.
